On November 15, 2007, the employees of Southeastern Management Group, Inc. volunteered by giving their time and energy to assist with the construction of a sustainable home. The “Green Building Blitz” is the first of its kind for the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity and SEMG was excited to help out. Many of the items that make this a “green” project include: the special insulated windows, recycled denim insulation, and a low-energy HVAC unit.

Upon arrival, the volunteers from Southeastern learned that the project of the day was to assist with the framing of the roof. From the sheathing to the hurricane supports, everyone came out ready to learn and lend a hand where needed. With hammers in hand, SEMG volunteers helped finish the roof trusses and then hoisted them onto the frame of the house for installation. Then it was time to enclose the roof and to install the very important hurricane clips. As the week continues, other crews of volunteers will also donate their time to help finish this home for a local family.

With 29 years in the sea islands of South Carolina, Sea Island Habitat for Humanity has built more than 220 homes, with a goal of building 14 more homes in 2007. Sea Island Habitat is the third oldest affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing.

Habitat for Humanity International and it’s affiliates represent more than 3,000 communities in 100 nations, and have built more than 200,000 homes since 1976. Habitat selected families invest 500 hours of “sweat equity” and purchase the house on a no-profit, no-interest 20 year mortgage.
